Elke Martens

Elke Martens was born on a farm in Northern Germany in 1952. After completing her apprenticeship as a pottery maker in 1969, she proceeded to work at various different workshops in Germany and France.

She graduated from the Institute of Ceramic Design in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany, in 1976, under Professors Matthes and Crumbiegel.

Elke Martens received the coveted Richard - Bambi award in 1978 and has made her delightful ceramic vessels and plastics ever since. The artist has been 'commuting' between her cottage in Germany and her home in South Africa for almost 25 years.

Some of her works have been aquired by the Museum for Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany, and the Museum für Keramik " Keramion ", Frechen, Germany.
